Mastic Asphalt
Asphalt is a black material, usually solid at ambient
temperatures, which softens then melts when heated. It can
then be poured and then spread or cast to accommodate almost
any shape. Excellent adhesive properties. With the correct
formulation an asphalt material will possess superb waterproofing
properties.
MASTIC ASPHALT is widely used for waterproofing, and should not be confused with other common types of HOT ROLLED ASPHALT which are not waterproof.
MASTIC ASPHALT is formulated with a higher proportion of the bitumen binder than most other types of asphalt, and the selection of the filler and aggregates are such that the mix is virtually free of any voids. This produces a material which will completely waterproof any surface or structure to which it is applied.
Other Asphalt Types. MASTIC ASPHALT should not be confused or compared to asphalt materials used in general ROAD SURFACING, e.g. Hot Rolled Asphalt, Bituminous Macadam, Stone Mastic Asphalt, Porous Asphalt., etc. THESE ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MATERIALS, which would never be used for the waterproofing tasks which demand genuine Mastic Asphalt as they are not waterproof.
Asphalt = Bitumen + Filler + Aggregates
There are many different types of asphalt - roughly based
on mixtures of the three basic components, sometimes with
the addition of proprietary additives to enhance some aspect
of their performance.
Aggregates: chosen from the many types of crushed stone, natural stones, and sands, in a variety of gradings.
Filler: a selected finely crushed grade of limestone
Bitumen: chosen from various grades to suit the end use.
Note: In the U.S.A. Bitumen is also called asphalt - which is the same word they use to describe a formulated asphalt - can be very confusing !!
